Ruling clears way for construction of Hinesburg gas pipeline

HINESBURG, Vt. (AP) — Vermont Gas has been given the green light to start construction on a natural gas pipeline in Hinesburg following a recent ruling by the state Public Service Board.

The board’s decision on Tuesday grants easement access to the utility to begin work on the pipeline under Geprags Park via horizontal drilling.

Opponents seeking to block the pipeline claimed the project violates Vermont’s Prior Public Use Doctrine. But the board wrote in its order that the easement would “neither destroy nor materially impair” the existing recreational uses of the public park.

Vermont Gas’ CEO says the ruling paves the way for completion of the Addison Natural Gas Expansion Project this year.

An attorney representing a group of Hinesburg residents says his clients are prepared to appeal to the state Supreme Court.
