Marcellus permit activity in Pennsylvania, August 18th through August 23rd

The Marcellus Shale formation in Pennsylvania created a little buzz with the addition of 21 new permits last week.  However, the Carnegie Science Center shared some big news regarding additions to its science, technology, engineering and math education (STEM) program.

If you love science, the center’s latest addition is something you will not want to miss.  The brand new Fab Lab is a digital fabrication lab, along with a space specifically created for students to engage with science, technology, engineering and math education (STEM) by means of hands-on activities.

The Carnegie Science Center’s Co-Director Ann Metzger explained that the Fab Lab opens new doors for the center when it comes to STEM education.  The lab will also allow the center to provide more education options for students and the general public.

The Fab Lab, which consists of mobile and stationary lab stations, includes 3-D printers, laser cutters, video conference equipment, ShopBot CNC milling machines, and electronic workbench equipment which includes robotics.  The lab will also have two mini-mill/ 3-D scanners, sewing/embroidery machines and projectors and documentation cameras.

Field trips and afterschool programs are currently being scheduled for school-age students, along with programs for the general public.
