Marcellus permit activity in Pennsylvania, August 10th through August 16th

The Marcellus Shale formation in Pennsylvania saw quite a bit of action over the last week, but one major development came in the form of wind, and lucky for Washington D.C. one company has enough energy to share.

The District of Columbia has reached out and made a deal with Iberdrola Renewables, a Spanish company that owns South Chestnut Wind Power Project located in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, to receive energy generated by the project to help lower its carbon footprint.  The South Chestnut Wind Power Project has 23 wind turbines that will be generating the energy for D.C.

According to Washington D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser, this is the “largest wind power deal of its kind ever entered into by an American city.” He also explained how the deal will save D.C. nearly $45 million over the next 20 years, and the power received from the wind project will equal enough electricity to power an estimated 12,000 homes.
