Maria Pilar Regalado told her husband she was going to give her 17-year-old nephew Luis Rey a ride from their home before Rey reportedly shot her to death and attempted to shoot his uncle.
Rey has been charged by the Odessa Police Department with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was being held Monday without bond at the Ector County Detention Center.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Regalado was allowing Rey to use her cell phone at about 2 a.m. Sunday at their trailer at 904 Rebecca Road.
Regalado offered to give Rey a ride and then went to the bedroom to tell her husband, Porfirio Regalado, that she would be back afterwards, according to the affidavit.
Porfirio Regalado told police in the affidavit that he heard a gunshot in the front of his residence and then saw Rey coming toward his bedroom with a shotgun.
The two struggled for control of the gun, according to the affidavit, and in the process it fired again before Porfirio Regalado took it from Rey.
Rey then ran out the door, according to the affidavit.
Porfirio Regalado said he went into the living room, where he found his wife with a gunshot wound to her neck, according to the affidavit. He then threw the shotgun on the roof and called police from a neighbor’s home.
Rey called the OPD and turned himself in, according to the affidavit, at which point he admitted to shooting his aunt and attempting to shoot his uncle.
Police found Maria Regalado dead in the living room near the kitchen, “with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to her throat,” according to the affidavit.
