Houston engineering firm hires company’s first female CEO

In a mostly male-dominated sector, Houston-based Wood Group Mustang engineering firm has chosen to buck the trend and hire its first female CEO, Michele McNichol, according to the Houston Business Journal. McNichol will be replacing current President Steve Knowles, who has led the company since 2006. Knowles, who is still in his early 50s, said he plans to retire April 1. McNichol previously served as executive vice president of WG Mustang.

The decision to hand the keys over to McNichol seemed like a rather simple one. McNichol has more than 25 years of experience in the oil and gas industry and has been with WG Mustang since 2001. She also served as president of the upstream business unit and regional director for upstream operations across the Americas.

Wood Group Mustang is a part of Scotland-based Wood Group PLC. Bob Keiller, Wood Group PLC CEO, commented on the new hiring:

“Wood Group Mustang has had great success under Steve’s watch, and we thank him for his strong leadership and commitment to WG Mustang’s business and people. We look forward to Michele fulfilling the CEO role and bringing her perspectives, experience, leadership and energy to the job at a time when we see many challenges and opportunities ahead.”

McNichol received her degree in chemical engineering at Texas A&M University.
